Do You Need a CDL?
Do you currently live in Oklahoma and plan on operating a Class A, B, or C commercial vehicle? If so, then you will need to obtain an Oklahoma commercial driver's license. Other endorsements will be needed for double/triple trailers, tanker vehicles, passenger vehicles, and vehicles placarded for hazardous materials.
- Class A License - Obtain this license if you want to operate a combination vehicle with a Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) that exceeds 26,000 pounds, as long as the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is more than 10,000 pounds.
- Class B License - This license is for those who want to operate single or combination vehicles where the GVWR of the single vehicle exceeds 26,000 pounds.
- Class C License - This license is needed for drivers who want to operate a vehicle that is designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver, as well as vehicles placarded for hazardous materials that don't fit into the above category.
The Skills Test
After you successfully pass a knowledge test, you will then move on to a skills test. During this section, you will be quizzed on the following: pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control, and on-road driving. These skills must be tested in the type of vehicle for which you wish to be licensed:
- Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection - It's necessary to know if your vehicle is safe. You will be asked to perform an inspection, as well as explain to the examiner what you're inspecting and why.
- Basic Vehicle Control - You need to know how to control your vehicle. You will have to move the vehicle forward, backward, and turn it within a defined area.
- On-Road Test - It's imperative to be able to drive your vehicle in a variety of traffic situations, including: left and right turns, intersections, railway crossings, and more.
Extra Requirements
In order to get your CDL, you will have to meet a list of other requirements. For example, you will have to pass a physical examination every two years. You must possess good hearing, 20/40 vision with or without glasses or contact lenses, and a 70-degree field of vision in each eye. Drivers cannot be colorblind.

Before going to the DMV, make sure you have the following documents: your current driver's license, a Department of Transportation Physical Examination Form, and a social security card.
