CDL Frequently Asked Questions

Federal law requires that all states issue a CDL to drivers according to license classifications. Here are the Class designations from the Federal Government:

• Class A License - Any combination of vehicles with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds. For example, a Fuel Truck, a Cargo Truck (Semi), or Doubles.
• Class B License - Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds GVWR. For example, a Fire Truck, a Dump Truck, a Garbage Truck, or a Cement Mixer Truck.
• Class C License - Any single vehicle, or combination of vehicles, that does not meet the definition of Class A or Class B, but is either designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver, or is placarded for hazardous materials. For example, a School Bus or a Passenger Bus.

The CDL General Knowledge test consist of 50 questions. ALL Class A, Class B, and Class C CDL drivers must successfully complete this test according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The questions are selected randomly from a data base of hundreds of questions. Therefore, you must know all material extremely well in order to pass the CDL General Knowledge exam.

A Class C license is one of the classifications for a CDL license as provided by the federal government. It is required for any single vehicle, or combination of vehicles, that does not meet the definition of Class A or Class B, but is either designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver, or is placarded for hazardous materials.

A Class D license is not a Commercial Drivers License (CDL). Class D requirements vary from state to state. See your local state's driver handbook for details.

A CDL is required for the following classifications of vehicle which are based upon weight, number of passengers, or the transport of hazardous materials:

• Class A License - Any combination of vehicles with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
• Class B License - Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds GVWR.
• Class C License - Any single vehicle, or combination of vehicles, that does not meet the definition of Class A or Class B, but is either designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver, or is placarded for hazardous materials

Class A, B, and C CDL Licenses require various endorsements, depending upon the vehicle type, and transport of passengers or hazardous materials. Federal endorsements are provided by states licensing agencies after you have successfully completed various written knowledge tests (and sometimes driving tests) for the categories below. Note that endorsements can only be obtained after a CDL has been issued to a driver.

• T Semi trailer Double or Triple (Written Test) Note that some states, such as Florida, New York and California, prohibit triple trailers statewide.
• A Class A license is required to obtain the T endorsement
• P Passenger Vehicle (Written and Driving Tests)
• S School Bus (Written and Driving Test, Background Check, Sex Offender Registry Check and P endorsement)
• N Tank Truck (Written Test)
• H Hazardous materials (Written Test and Background Check through the Transportation Security Administration)
• X Combination of Tank Vehicle and Hazardous Materials (Written Test)

Formal training is not required to get a CDL. A CDL candidate must complete a written General Knowledge Test with a grade of 80% or higher. The CDL applicant must then pass the driving skills test and the student driver must successfully perform a required set of driving maneuvers. This test must be taken in a vehicle that the driver operates or anticipates he or she will operate. Applicants must also obtain a valid medical certificate which must be completed by a medical professional listed on the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners and, at the conclusion of an extensive physical exam, a copy of the results will be forwarded to the state DMV (or other agency) responsible for administering CDL licensing. There a minimum physical standards as provided by the federal government. Once you obtain your CDL, you can then take endorsement testing that are required for specific Class A, B, and C licenses.
