When do I need a CDL in Wisconsin?
To drive a Class A, B, or C commercial vehicle, you need to possess a CDL. Wisconsin CDL classifications are as follows:
- Class A License - The Class A license applies to "combination" vehicles with a Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) that exceeds 26,000 pounds, in which the weight of the vehicle being towed also exceeds 10,000 pounds. If the towed vehicle is less than 10,000 pounds, a Class B license will suffice.
- Class B License - This class includes single or combination vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds; however, the vehicle in tow cannot exceed 10,000 pounds.
- Class C License - If vehicles are designed to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver), marked to carry hazardous materials, or do not meet the criteria for Class A or B licenses as described above, it falls under this certain classification.
CDL Knowledge and Skills Tests
Once you have passed the required knowledge test(s), you will have to take the CDL skills tests. The three following skills tests are necessary to obtain your license:
- Pre-trip Vehicle Inspection - Prior to performing your driving test, you will be asked to do a pre-trip inspection of your vehicle, as well as explain to the examiner why you did so.
- Basic Vehicle Control - A highly important aspect of the skills test is being able to control your vehicle in a basic manner. This test includes reversing, moving forward, and turning within a defined area.
- On-road Test - During this segment, you will be tested on your ability to safely drive you vehicle in a variety of traffic situations. You must take this test in the same type of vehicle that you are to be licensed for.
